Why Is The Pont Du Gard An Excellent Example Of Ancient Engineering?

Aqueducts Were Bridges Built By The Ancient Romans To Carry Water From Lakes And Springs To Different Parts Of The Empire. The Pont Du Gard Is An Aqueduct Bridge That Crosses The River Gardon In The South Of France. It Formed Part Of A Larger Aqueduct Known As The Nimes Aqueducts.

The Bridge Itself Is 275 Meters In Length, And 49 Meters In Height. It Was Built On Three Levels, And Has Three Tiers Of Arches. The Water Was Carried In Channel That Was At The Top Level. The Uppers Levels Curve A Little.

This Was Done Deliberately For Added Strength, As Huge Amount Of Water A Day Crossed The Aqueducts , Exerting An Enormous Amount Of Pressure On The Structure. Although The Pont Du Gard Is No Longer A Functioning Aqueduct, The Very Fact That It Is Still Of Standing Is A Testimonial To The Skill Of The Ancient Engineers.

Fact: The Colossal Structure Is As Heavy As It Looks, At Almost 50,000 Tonnes. One Thousand Men Laboured For Five Years To Build The Titanic Structure.
